Ready to shoot!

I am filling up my calendar up fast...seems like everything is in May or June. I will compete at the Senior Olympics in Santa Fe in March then in May I will travel to Michigan and compete in air rifle and swimming. In June I will be off to Virginia for the National Veterans Wheelchair Games there I will compete in air rifle, swimming and the dreaded obstacle corse! Can we say helmet, duck tape and bungie cords???

Well 2011 is almost over...not one that I will be sad to come to a close. I do not make New Year's Resolutions but do reread my Stroke and Croak List and see what needs to be added (sky diving!) I also take a look at the upcoming year as far as sports training, events, speaking engagements, travel and volunteer time.

I am thankful that I DID live through 2011 (OK in a few days) and hopeful for a better year as far as my MS goes and some other medical issues. I never really know what opportunities may come my way for travel, etc. I goes without saying that I am really looking forward to being matched with my new CCI service dog.

Sorry it has been so long since I have posted.... My Mom is in rehab. She had to have major back surgery that was unplanned and has been in the hospital since Thanksgiving. She is now in rehab and doing very well. She hopes to go home in early Jan. Please keep her in your prayers, her name is Thelma Hayes. Thanks.

Sunny, my service dog, had to go back to CCI in CA sue to stress issues. She had some retraining and is being matched this week in a side placement (not Team Training for 2 weeks but a one on one with the handler and the CCI trainer). CCI flew her trainer, Katie, to ABQ and she took Sunny back to CCI. It was a very hard decision to make but it was the best thing for her. I am now on the national waiting list, since I am willing to travel, so I hope that the wait will not be too long.

I have my Christmas tree up as well as a few decorations. I really enjoyed the Cantata at church yesterday. Christmas day we will have our annual Christmas breakfast in El Centro. It is always a hoot to see the type of PJ's or robes that folks were. I found a cute pair of silk green PJ bottoms with reindeer's on them and I already had a red top with reindeer's on them so that is what I will wear. I have a flannel ones with holiday dogs on them but I have worn them the last 3 years so I thought I would switch things up a bit.

I go inpatient in Jan for my annual SCI evaluation Jan. 16th and then have my hand surgery on the 23rd. I have bone over growth in my left hand that has gotten bigger and bigger in the last 3 years so the surgeon will take the excess bone off.

Family issues

Sorry I have not posted in a while. My mom had to have unexpected spinal surgery, she was admitted to the hospital on Thanksgiving day.. She was transferred yesterday to a rehab facility. She still has no use of both legs but she does have some feeling in them so I am praying for a full recovery.

My sister, Deborah, is going to be with her form today till most likely Christmas. She arrives today in FL today from her home in MT and my niece, Chelsea, will arrive on December 22nd to help out too.

Please keep her in your prayers for a speedy and full recovery. Her name is Thelma Hayes. Thank you!

"I" is for Insurance and income

Social Security Insurance

For a person living with a disability you MAY qualify for SSDI. Social Security Disability Insurance IF you worked and payed into SS. This provides APPROVED persons with a monthly income as well for some people Medicare. Medicare will assist with some, but not all, of your medical expenses and you can pay for addition insurance to help cover medication.

Applying is a little easier now that you can do it online. This a a long process and will require medical proof of the disability. Usually medical records to name one. Most people who apply are denied the first time they apply. The next step would be to file an appeal. You can do this yourself or hire an attorney. You have all seen the ads on TV for lawyers who specialize in working with folks to get their SSDI. A word to the wise here...they can get your benefits IF they do a good job BUT they will take a % of your back pay. The pay starts from the day you file IF you are approved. This could be 6 months to God knows when they approve it. This can be a large sum of money if the case takes a long time on appeal.

I was blessed as I had so much medical documentation and my Mom helped me fill in all the forms. At the time I was on heavy meds and very ill so this took more than one sitting to get it all done. I felt it was best that I filled in the forms and my hand writing was really bad so it took a while. THANKS to my Mom for her help with this.

Some folks may have disability insurance that will help with medical bills and still others may have medical retirement as income to help with the bills. Be sure to check this out..I had no clue until my Mom was helping with all the paper work and she called the city of Chesapeake as that is where I was teaching at the time I became ill. I did qualify for disability retirement income because I had worked in a city position for over 10 years. Just check as it will not hurt to do so.

A side note some life insurance companies have a disability rider that will cover your life insurance payments so you still have life insurance but no payment. Again I had no clue till my older sister told me to ask my insurance company about this. I had indeed gotten the disability rider ( I had no clue as I had gotten the insurance so long ago) this will free up some income.

"H" is for hospital

Hospital

Well no one wants to think about being a patient in the hospital but as a person living with a disability it is a GREAT year when your NOT a patient during that year!

There are many reasons that a person may need to be in the hospital, some are:

Flu

Skin break down

Rehydration

Operation (s)

Change in medications

Side effects of medications

Closer monitoring by health care staff

Health issues related to their disability

If you need to be a patient in the hospital here are a few tips.

Remember to have a little "just in case" toiletry bag ready. This is very helpful if you are not the one that is gathering up what needs to be taken to the hospital.

Medical Power of Attorney papers...if you have not done this you need to do it so that your wishes will be carried out in the manner that you want them to be.

List of people and phone contact numbers.

A favorite pair of PJ's...NO ONE wants their butt sticking out of those awful hospital gowns. We all know that at times you will have no other choice but if you can chose I say go with what makes you feel good.

If you have a service dog then you will need to have plans in place for their care if you are unable to do so. This also goes for having your mail brought in, etc. These are things that need to be taken care of BEFORE you need them. You may need to make an extra set of keys so your mail can be gotten, a house key in case you need something brought to you from your home.

OK enough of this. Be prepared for the worst and pray for the best!

Finical Planning for Persons With Disabilities

This is often an area that is over looked- finical planning. Persons with disabilities need to be sure they have their affairs in order. You do not need to have a big savings account but you still need to be aware of what finical options you have. Do you receive SSDI, VA benefits, disability payments from life insurance? Can you draw on your life insurance if you need it for living expenses? Is any one leaving you money when they pass away ? This are all things that need to be taken in consideration as well as the obvious, the finical cost of your medical care. Do you have medical insurance, Medicare, Medicaid?

Do not wait...time goes by faster than we think it will. Tomorrow will be here before you know it.

Emergency Supply Kit

This is NOT a complete list as each person has their own special needs. This will give you a starting place to make your own list. This is in ADDITION to a regular emergency supply kit. You can get more information about a Emergency Kit from the Red Cross website.

Other Special Items

In addition to the above, you need to include items for family members with special needs. People with disabilities will need to consider including the items listed below in either their Emergency Supplies Kit #1 or #2 or both. Don’t forget, you should have Kit #1 with you at all times. This information is recommended by the National Organization on Disability (NOD).

Medical equipment and assistive devices

These items include glasses, hearing aids, catheters, augmentative communication devices, canes, and walkers. Label each item with your name and contact information. Also, include instructions as to how to operate your assistive device.

All medication that may be needed
Bowel and bladder supplies (if needed)
Small first aid kit
Mirror if needed to check for pressure sores
Sheep skin/egg crate foam if needed for sleeping
Eye mask for night time sleeping (lights may be on much longer than you are used to)
Ear plugs (will be much louder than your home and will be needed to sleep.
Eye glasses/contact lenses
Hearing aid (if needed and extra batteries)
Flash light

These items should be kept in a convenient, consistent place so you can quickly locate them in an emergency. Tape a note to your supplies kit that will serve as a reminder to take the applicable device with you if you’re evacuated. Also, at night, if you sleep with any of these devices near you, put them in a container that’s easy to reach if you have to leave immediately.

Mobility Disabilities

Mobility Disabilities - According to the NOD, mobility disabilities refer to people with little or no use of their arms or legs. They usually use wheelchairs, scooters, walkers, canes and other devices as aids to help them remain mobile. If you have a mobility disability, you should consider including the following items in your supplies kit:

•Heavy gloves to use while wheeling.

•Extra battery for motorized wheelchair or scooter.

•Recharging device to be connected to an automobile cigarette lighter or other power source

•Repair kit to fix flat tires.

•Spare cane or walker.

Sensory disabilities

Sensory disabilities refer to people with hearing or visual limitations. If you have a sensory disability, you should consider including the following additional items in your kit:

•Pad of paper with pens or pencils for writing notes.

•Extra batteries for tape recorders, TTYs, etc.

•Extra pair of dark glasses.

•Folding mobility cane.

Developmental or Cognitive Disabilities

Developmental or cognitive disabilities refer to people with significant brain disorders or severe developmental disabilities that need assistance with every facet of daily living. If you have a developmental or cognitive disability, consider including the following:

•Alternative power source or spare batteries for a communication device

•Paper and writing materials

•Favorite items to help you maintain focus while waiting in lines

Service animals

Supplies for your service animal. Try to pack these items in a bag that can be easily gotten to when needed.

•Bowl for water and food. Remember you should have at least a three day supply of water and food, not only for yourself, but for your service animal.

•Blanket for bedding

•Plastic bags and paper towels for disposing of feces

•Neosporin ointment for minor wounds

•Favorite toy

•Extra harness/leash/flexi-lead

•Identification tags and proof of up-to-date vaccinations and veterinarian contact

Folding crate if possible. The dog may become stressed with all the noise and will need some where to rest.

The ADA requires emergency evacuation shelters to allow service animals.

"D" is for driving

Driving/Transportaion

Driving is possible for persons living with a disability. Some folks are able to drive a car/van/truck without any modifications to the vehicle. Some people need a van with a ramp/lift to proved transportation to a family member who uses a wheelchair for mobility. Other folks are living with a disability and are able to drive with modifications to the vehicle.

Some modifications are:

Hand controls- instead of driving with feet using the gas/brake this is done by hand with an extra handle usually on the left of the steering column. Some are push/pull and some are twist (like a motorcycle).

Ramp/lift- This is on a van. It can be a larger van and that is usually a lift that comes out and down so the person can leave and get into the van.

A mini van has a ramp. It can be one that comes out from under the can or it can be one that folds up and then the door closes.

Drop van- A van that lowers down so the ramp is less steep to get into/out of the van. I have one of these and folks really get a kick out of seeing the van lower or go back up. Here in New Mexico we have folks that drive "low riders" or "cut downs" so I fit right in!

6 Way seat- A drivers seat that swivels so a person in a wheelchair can transfer into the seat. It goes up on a pulley system, turns around facing towards the windshield. The seat an go up and down as well as forwards and backwards. This is really cool and allows a variety of folks with disabilities to drive.

Hand control brakes.- An extra handle that allows a person with no use of their legs to set the barking brake using their hand. I have this but have never used it.

Automatic windshield wipers- The wipers come on when the windshield gets wet...this is the idea. I had major problems with mine. They would turn on/off when they wanted to- usually when it was bone dry outside. You cannot turn them on/off manually. So it was a mess and caused some weird looks at traffic lights with my wipers on squeaking and no rain outside. I can mine disconnected and I use them manually- this is a bit tricky as I have to take my hand off of the gas/brake.....

Lock downs- This secures the wheelchair in a fixed position. They are usually straps that have a ratchet style hook that is fastened to the wheelchair in the front (2) and then the back of the wheelchair (2). This takes a while to do each and every time the person needs to get in/out of the van. A quick lock can be used and is mounted under the wheelchair seat (only wheelchairs with a full back and head rest) and then on the floor is the quick lock. You pull your wheelchair up to the steering wheel and it locks into place. There is no drivers seat as the wheelchair becomes the drivers seat.

"C" is for Care Givers

November is National Care Givers Month. Care givers are very important for many people living with disabilities. Most often this task is provided by family members. To say the least this is not an easy task, even for those who do this for pay.
If it is a child living with a disability usually a parent is the primary care giver. Some of the MANY tasks they may preform include: bathing, dressing, feeding, social interactions, school (if needed), taking the child to medical appointments (this can be a few a month to some times 3 or 4 a week). This is a full time job. This can lead to burn out and leaves the parent with no to little time for themselves.
At times an outside caregiver will be paid to come to the home to assist. Their task vary as to the needs of the client. They made do household chores, food shopping or care giving for the actual adult/child living with a disability.
If you know of a family that does not have an outside care giver I would be nice to offer to go to the store, post office, run errands for the family. You would be surprised how much this would help out. EVERYONE has some time they can help out...just something to think about if you are blessed to have good health.

Bladder Management

OK today's letter is "B". So usually in the gimp world this is know as (B & B) bowel and bladder management. I chose bladder as the bowel, I thought would just be too much. If you care you can Google it and find out more than you EVER wanted to know.

Bladder Management

Foley or Suprapubic CatheterA tube is inserted through the urethra or abdomen and into the bladder, where a balloon on the end holds it in place. It remains in the bladder and drains constantly, so the bladder is never full.

External Catheterization

Condom CathetersThese collection devices are worn by men for incontinence problems. They are made of latex rubber or silicone that covers the penis and attaches to a tube that drains into a collection bag.
External Continence Device (ECD)An ECD is a method of continence management that attaches only to the tip of the penis using hydrocolloid, a hypoallergenic adhesive commonly used in wound and ostomy care. Urine is directed into a collection bag and does not come in contact with skin.

Intermittent CatheterizationYou drain your bladder several times a day by inserting a small rubber or plastic tube. The tube does not stay in the bladder between catheterizations.

Spontaneous VoidingThe bladder muscles contract to start the bladder-emptying process. This may be under your control (voluntary) or not (involuntary):

Normal VoidingThis is done under your control. When the bladder gets full, messages are sent to the sacral level of the spinal cord and carried to the brain. The brain sends messages back to the bladder to contract, and to the sphincter muscle to open, so you can void.
SpincterotomyThis surgical process weakens the bladder neck and sphincter muscle to allow urine to flow out more easily. After this surgery, you will urinate involuntarily, and must wear a collection device.
Condom CatheterThese collection devices are worn by men for incontinence problems or after sphincterotomy (see above). They are made of latex rubber or silicone that covers the penis and attaches to a tube that drains into a collection bag.

Stimulated VoidingVoiding is encouraged in one of several ways, such as:

Anal or Rectal StretchThis method for relaxing the urinary sphincter is usually used along with an abdominal corset and valsalva (see below).
CredeThis method involves manually pressing down on the bladder.
TappingThe area over the bladder is tapped with the fingertips or the side of the hand, lightly and repeatedly, to stimulate detrusor muscle contractions and voiding.
ValsalvaThis method involves increasing pressure inside the abdomen by bearing down as if you were going to have a bowel movement.

Surgical Alternatives

MitrofanoffA passageway is constructed using the appendix so that catheterization can be done through the abdomen to the bladder.
Bladder AugmentationSurgical enlargement of the bladder.

SpincterotomySee the description of this procedure in the "Spontaneous Voiding" section.

OK I am going to start out on a lighter note....here is a funny picture of Sunny with one of her MANY toys that she has to play with. Sometimes she likes to roll over on her back and toss the toy around and then catch it with both paws! Very funny.

This month I am going to do the A,B,C's of living with a disability. Some of the letters of the alphabet you might "think" you know what I am going to write but....you will see. This blog is NOT just for folks without disabilities but also folks who are living with a disability too, you might just learn something new!

Well I cannot help myself so let's start with the letter A.

An AB is slang for an Abled Bodied person. Someone who is not living with a disability.

Well that about sums it up! This is just to funny..I could most likely do this, or at least try but I think most paras would end up a quad or worse.

Most places now have areas where persons with disabilities gather in case of a fire. Staff will go there to ensure that everyone gets out...usually they have signs like the exit ones that are blue as well as signs on the wall....I do not want to test this one out.

Here is a photo of me at the 18th hole of the CCI CA Golf Event. At each of the CCI golf events in NM, AZ and CA they did this each time. I have photos with me at each of the events. This pin flag has now been retired and will be displayed at the SW Regional Location.

This was such a nice way for CCI to recognize our troops both on active duty and retired and disabled veterans.

National Disability Employment Month

October is National Disability Employment Month. Everyone knows it is also National Breast Cancer Month.

Bud did you know that over 85% of persons living with disabilities are unemployed? I know the unemployment rate is high for everyone but it has ALWAYS been higher for persons with disabilities. You may wonder why this is so...fair hiring practices are in place so how does this happen.

Resumes are sent in..OK the person gets a call for an interview. This is where the main issue is. When the person who is conducting the interview they already have a preconceived idea that if they hire the person living with a disability a few things will happen:

They will miss work do to their disability

Other staff will not want to work with some one who has a disability

If the job is dealing with the public what will the public think of the company if a person is the "face" of the company?

If anything happens to the person they company would be sued.

OK so you get the idea. NONE of these ideas are true. Sure folks will have a sick day, all people who are employed get sick once in a while. What the other staff think of the person with a disability should not even been a factor in hiring. If need be a in service could be done to educate them about the type of disability. This would best be done by the person themselves..who better to speak about their disability. As for being the "face" of the company well WE are here and if you ask me (you did not but I will tell you anyway since this is MY blog) in my opinion it would make the company seem more inclusive. As for me I am more likely to shop, use their services, etc. if they DO have a person with a disability working for them. The company is more open minded when they hire people based on what they can do, not what the company thinks they can do. Persons with disabilities are no more likely to sue than any other employee.

OK enough said but I thought you should know that is month is ALSO National Disability Employment Month.

Well I went to see A Dolphins Tail with my friend Patrick. It was a great movie and I really liked it. The story is a feel good one and based on true events. The title on today s post can be clicked on to a link to Winter's (that is the dolphins name) website.

It had people living with disabilities in it as well as veterans. To be sure you know I was checking that out to see if it was correct and sure enough it was...right down to the CAF logos (Challenge Athletes Foundation)!

Seat Belt Ad from the UK

Well we all know that we need to wear our seat belts. I ALWAYS wear mine. When we were kids my parents told us the car would not start unless the seat belts were done...OK we were kids so we REALLY thought that the car would not move...only years later did we figure it out.

So anyway now on TV you see in your face commercials with bodies on the highway, some dead, some battered and broken, cops with someone in handcuffs...you get the idea...very in your face.

This man in the UK decided he wanted to make his own commercial without any talking, sounds of police cars, crashing cars, etc. So he made the commercial basically for himself and showed it to a few friends. It was so great and went viral that the UK now shows it on TV. It is awesome.

Wild tennis shoes

Pink Tennis Shoes

OK so here is the deal. I have been looking for some really cool tennis shoes. Since I can wear kids size I thought I would check some out when I was in Kohl's the other day. So I HATE pink as anyone can tell you but LOVE tie dyed! Thus the delima...LOVE the rainbow sparkels on the toes- they light up but you have to walk in them- so that isn't a factor. Let me know what you all think- via email.

Day planner full & helping others in need...

OK so I have a lot planned in a date book...but I AM learning to slow down a little each day to watch TV, play a fierce game of fetch with Sunny, or I never thought I wold say this, read! Remember life goes faster the older you get so don't waste time on things that do not really matter but rather on things you enjoy and also give back to others. Giving back has all its own rewards... donating to a local food bank is a real way for kids to help. Let them look at the ads for sales, cut out coupons and then go shopping for the food, kids LOVE getting the items themselves and putting them in the shopping cart and drop off the food. I teaches the value of a dollar and also most importantly to care for our fellow man.

Great Dog Seat Cover

This a great back seat cover for dog owners and lovers a like! I bought it at Petsmart. It is made by American Tourister. It comes in 3 colors I chose gray as it matches my van color. It is waterproof. The little bag in the middle is a super easy way to carry a dog bowl, extra water, clean up supplies and a Ziploc of dog food, leashes, etc. It is not in the way as you can see by the photos.

I did make some alterations so it would fit better- can we say OCD! It comes with straps and buckles for attaching it to the rear seat. For my van (a conversion van with lift, etc.) It did not leave enough room for me to fit the bottom strap. I just added 6 strips of elastic to the sides that go around the back) and then sewed 4 box seams (one for each corner of the seat) and this makes for a nicer look and fit as well.

I bought this over 2 months ago and it still looks new.

Just a thought I am not Consumer Reports but just my thoughts....

Sunny, me and Patrick went to see "The Help". It is a great movie and if you have not seen it go see it! Sunny. I do not think, had been to a movie before..she did not like the loud volume but after a while she settled in a feel asleep in front of me (and out of the way of course!).
Have been busy with VA's new Service Dog policy...more on that later!

They told me the big black Lab's name was Reggie,
as I looked at him lying in his pen.. The shelter was
clean, no-kill, and the people really friendly.
I'd only been in the area for six months, but everywhere
I went in the small college town, people were welcoming and open.
Everyone waves when you pass them on the street.

But something was still missing as I attempted to
settle in to my new life here, and I thought a dog
couldn't hurt. Give me someone to talk to.
And I had just seen Reggie's advertisement on the local
news. The shelter said they had received numerous
calls right after, but they said the people who had come
down to see him just didn't look like "Lab
people," whatever that meant. They must've thought I did.

But at first, I thought the shelter had misjudged me in giving me Reggie and his things, which consisted of a dog pad, bag of toys almost all of which were brand new tennis balls, his dishes, and a sealed letter from his previous owner. See, Reggie and I didn't really hit it off when we got home. We struggled for two weeks (which is how long the shelter told me to give him to adjust to his new home). Maybe it was the fact that I was trying to adjust, too.
Maybe we were too much alike.

For some reason, his stuff (except for the tennis balls --- he wouldn't go anywhere without two stuffed in his mouth) got tossed in with all of my other unpacked boxes.
I guess I didn't really think he'd need all his old stuff, that I'd get him new things once he settled in. But it became pretty clear pretty soon that he wasn't going to.

I tried the normal commands the shelter told me he knew, ones like "sit" and "stay" and "come" and "heel," and he'd follow them - when he felt like it.
He never really seemed to listen when I called his name --- sure, he'd look in my
direction after the fourth or fifth time I said it, but then he'd just go back to doing whatever. When I'd ask again, you could almost see him sigh and then grudgingly obey.

This just wasn't going to work. He chewed a couple shoes and some unpacked boxes. I was a little too stern with him and he resented it, I could tell.
The friction got so bad that I couldn't wait for the two
weeks to be up, and when it was, I was in full-on search
mode for my cell phone amid all of my unpacked stuff. I
remembered leaving it on the stack of boxes for the guest
room, but I also mumbled, rather cynically, that the
"damn dog probably hid it on me."

Finally I found it, but before I could punch up the
shelter's number, I also found his pad and other toys
from the shelter...I tossed the pad in Reggie's
direction and he snuffed it and wagged, some of the most
enthusiasm I'd seen since bringing him home. But
then I called, "Hey, Reggie, you like that? Come
here and I'll give you a treat." Instead, he sort of glanced in my direction --- maybe "glared" is more accurate --- and then gave a discontented sigh and flopped down ... with his back to me.

Well, that's not going to do it either, I thought. And I punched the shelter phone number.

But I hung up when I saw the sealed envelope.
I had completely forgotten about that, too.
"Okay, Reggie," I said out loud,
"let's see if your previous owner has any advice."

Whoever Gets My Dog:
Well, I can't say that I'm happy you're reading this, a letter I told the shelter
could only be opened by Reggie's new owner.
I'm not even happy writing it. If you're reading this,
it means I just got back from my last car ride with my Lab
after dropping him off at the shelter.
He knew something was different.
I have packed up his pad and toys before and set them by the back door before a trip, but this time... it's like he knew something was wrong.
And something is wrong...which is why I have
to go to try to make it right.

So let me tell you about my Lab in the hopes that it
will help you bond with him and he with you.

First, he loves tennis balls.
The more the merrier. Sometimes I think he's part
squirrel, the way he hordes them. He usually always
has two in his mouth, and he tries to get a third in
there. Hasn't done it yet. Doesn't
matter where you throw them, he'll bound after it, so be
careful - really don't do it by any roads. I made
that mistake once, and it almost cost him dearly.

Next, commands. Maybe the shelter staff already told you, but I'll go over them
again: Reggie knows the obvious ones ---
"sit," "stay," "come," "heel."
He knows hand signals:
"back" to turn around and go back when you put
your hand straight up; and "over" if you put your
hand out right or left. "Shake" for shaking
water off, and "paw" for a high-five. He
does "down" when he feels like lying down --- I bet
you could work on that with him some more. He knows
"ball" and "food" and "bone"
and "treat" like nobody's business.

I trained Reggie with small food treats.
Nothing opens his ears like little pieces of hot dog.

Feeding schedule: twice a day,once about seven in the morning, and again at six in the evening. Regular store-bought stuff; the shelter
has the brand.

He's up on his shots. Call the clinic on 9th Street and update his info with
yours; they'll make sure to send you reminders for when
he's due. Be forewarned: Reggie hates the vet.
Good luck getting him in the car. I don't know how he knows when it's time to go to the vet, but he knows.

Finally, give him some time.
I've never been married, so it's only been Reggie
and me for his whole life. He's gone everywhere
with me, so please include him on your daily car rides if
you can. He sits well in the backseat, and he
doesn't bark or complain. He just loves to be
around people, and me most especially.

Which means that this transition is
going to be hard, with him going to live with someone new.

And that's why I need to share
one more bit of info with you....

His name's not Reggie.

I don't know what made me do it, but
when I dropped him off at the shelter, I told them
his name was Reggie. He's a smart dog, he'll get used to it
and will respond to it, of that I have no
doubt. But I just couldn't bear to give them his
real name. For me to do that, it seemed so final, that
handing him over to the shelter was as good as me admitting
that I'd never see him again. And if I end up
coming back, getting him, and tearing up this letter, it
means everything's fine. But if someone else is
reading it, well ... well it means that his new owner should
know his real name. It'll help you bond with
him. Who knows, maybe you'll even notice a change
in his demeanor if he's been giving you problems.

His real name is "Tank".

Because that is what I drive.

Again, if you're reading this and you're from the area, maybe my name has been on the news. I told the shelter that they couldn't make
"Reggie" available for adoption until they
received word from my company commander. See, my
parents are gone, I have no siblings, no one I could've
left Tank with ... and it was my only real request of the
Army upon my deployment to Iraq , that they make one phone..
call the shelter ... in the "event" ... to tell
them that Tank could be put up for adoption. Luckily,
my colonel is a dog guy, too, and he knew where my platoon
was headed. He said he'd do it
personally. And if you're reading this, then
he made good on his word.

Well, this letter is getting downright depressing,
even though, frankly, I'm just
writing it for my dog. I couldn't imagine if I was
writing it for a wife and kids and family ... but still,
Tank has been my family for the last six years, almost as
long as the Army has been my family.

And now I hope and pray that you
make him part of your family and that he will adjust and
come to love you the same way he loved me.

That unconditional love from a dog
is what I take with me to Iraq as an inspiration to do
something selfless, to protect innocent people from those
who would do terrible things ... and to keep those terrible
people from coming over here. If I have to give up Tank
in order to do it, I am glad to have done so. He is
my example of service and of love. I hope I honored
him by my service to my country and comrades.

All right, that's enough.
I deploy this evening and have to drop this letter off at
the shelter. I don't think I'll say another
good-bye to Tank, though. I cried too much the first
time. Maybe I'll peek in on him and see if he
finally got that third tennis ball in his mouth.

Good luck with Tank. Give him a good home,
and give him an extra kiss goodnight - every night - from me.

I folded the letter and slipped it back in the envelope.
Sure I had heard of Paul Mallory, everyone in town knew him, even
new people like me. Local kid, killed in Iraq a few months ago and posthumously earning the Silver Star
when he gave his life to save three buddies.
Flags had been at half-mast all summer.

I leaned forward in my chair and rested my elbows on my knees, staring at the dog.

"Hey, Tank," I said quietly.

The dog's head whipped up, his ears cocked and his eyes bright.

"C'mere boy."

He was instantly on his feet, his nails clicking on
the hardwood floor. He sat in front of me, his head
tilted, searching for the name he hadn't heard in months.

"Tank," I whispered.

His tail swished.

I kept whispering his name, over and over, and each
time, his ears lowered, his eyes softened, and his posture
relaxed as a wave of contentment just seemed to flood
him. I stroked his ears, rubbed his shoulders, buried
my face into his scruff and hugged him.

"It's me now, Tank, just you and me.
Your old pal gave you to me." Tank reached up and
licked my cheek. "So whatdaya say we play some ball?"
His ears perked again.
"Yeah? Ball? You like that? Ball?"
Tank tore from my hands and disappeared in the next room.

And when he came back, he had three tennis balls in his mouth

He was matched with a BIG yellow Lab names Wonka. Wonka does the usual service dog duties but also assists Gabe going up and down the stairs and for balance when needed. I am so blessed to have met him and his wife. God bless Gabe... and keep on walkin'!

This is a memorial tile that was put at CCI SW center in Oceanside, CA. Some nice folks from New Mexico CCI group and other CCI family and my local vet, Dr. Pat, bought so every one who comes to SW CCI facility will see it.

The tile is such a nice memorial to my sweet Ellie and when all the tiles have been sold then the memorial garden in front will be finished. There is a wall fountion right above her tile whcih is fitting as she loved to be in the water.

Thanks to all who donated this tile for Ellie it really means a lot to me.

Sunny and I are getting into a routine of feeding (her) sleeping (both of us) and going "hurry (her outside to do her business). She has met the church pastor and staff, 1 of my doctors, gone to the gas station, animal shelter- to get her new city tags, thrift store, Albertsons (food store) to name a few. She loves to play with her Ricky Racoon...I got for Ellie last Christmas and needless to say it was new. I do not know what overcame me in Petsmart when I bought it! It has 16 seperate squeakers..all make different sounds.....
She is learning to "go bed" when some one comes and knocks/rings the door bell..so far so great! OK just a little ray of Sunny for you today!

CCI Dog Quilt

This is a photo of the CCI Dog Quilt that the children (with lots of help from the adults) of my church in memory of Ellie. The quilt squares were drawn by the children. Most have stick figures of a person with a dog. One has a dog in a space suit with money raining from the sky- his idea of how much the quilt would bring at the auction, another has a girl with a black dog and a large arrow pointing to the dog with the words "service dog", just in case someone did not know it was a working dog. They are all very cute. Several of the women at church, Wendy spearheaded the quilting itself, finished up the project. It is made to be a wall hanging complete with 3 hangers sewn on the back.

The quilt was auctioned off during the hospitality time between the early service and before Sunday school. Miss Janet, the Children's Director, told me the bidding was very intense! The person who won the quilt then donated it to me. I was so very touched. I wanted to share this lovely wall quilt with otters so they too could see and enjoy it. I will be taking it to Team Training and presenting it to the South West Training Center. The children also made clay adobe picture frames, in great detail with red chilies on the doors- etc., and those all sold out in a very short time. In all the children raised $1,300.00 for CCI in Ellie's memory.

I am so blessed to have such a great church family at St. John's United Methodist Church here in Santa Fe. THANKS to all who helped!

US Nationals for Air Rifle and Air Pistol

US Nationals

Ready, aim, fire

I am back from the US Nationals that were held in Ft. Benning, GA. Wow it was something else. I got my new shooting table that Dan made for me and it is AWESOME!! It attaches to my wheelchair and then I can attach my spring stand to the table. Makes it so much better for shooting than just using whatever table may be where I am shooting.

I really learned a lot from the other shooters who were there. Saw some of my veterans friends that were at the same shooting camp that I went to at the Olympic Training Center in Co. Springs, CO.

My goal was to just go and learn as much as possible and see how a larger match was held. I got classified by the International Paralympic Committee. I am a SHBa- that means I can use my shooting table and stand for support when I shoot prone and my stand when I shoot "standing" (that is something that is hard to explain since disabled shooters like me do not stand. I just did not want to come in last and I am happy to report that I did NOT come in last. I was over all very pleased with how the match went. Bob Foth was there and he is the Paralympic Shooting Coach and Andy from the PVA who helped me with ALL the things I needed. Carrying my air rifle, attaching/removing my shooting table/loading the pellets in my air rifle and anything else I needed. THANKS Andy!!

Dear Angel Ellie wishes you all a happy 4th of July

Happy 4th of July. I know I am 1 day early but tomorrow I will be on my way to the US Nationals in Ga. I have an early flight soooooo. I hope you all have a great day whatever you choose to do.

Here in New Mexico we are having no fire works.They have been pulled from Walmart, and the food stores. The Governor has asked the native Americans whom sell fire works in road side stands to voluntarily stop selling fire works. With all of your wild fires here and no rain in months- just ripe for more fires.

The 5th of July would have been Ellie's 8th birthday. That is why I chose her photo for this posting. I will being getting classified by the IPC (International Paralymic Committee) this is stressful as doctor will do an exam and look at all your written medical evidence. Not to worry I have lots and lots of medical papers. I will be thinking of my Sweet Ellie all day and I know she is in heaven having a great birthday party with all her new CCI and pet friends.

Dogs and the 4th of July

I PRAY I DO NOT HEAR THE FIRE WORKS OR GET TAKEN TO A PARADE

There is no better way to celebrate our country's independence and to
celebrate freedom by going on a picnic and attending a fireworks display.
However, CCI puppies SHOULD NOT attend fireworks displays/events. Please
leave the CCI puppy at home. Crating the puppy during this time is very
important. Exposure to fireworks has caused sound sensitivities and fear in
certain dogs. Don’t take the risk of creating a negative experience.

Parades are also a traditional 4th of July outing for families. Please
leave the puppy at home. Parades can be hot, loud, and overwhelming for
some dogs. Fire engines, marching bands, jet fly overs can be scary for
some dogs. Leaving the puppy at home in their crate will minimize the
potential of fear to develop. Please use lots of common sense this weekend.

If you are at home or at a friend's house when fireworks are going off in
the neighborhood, put the puppy in a crate in the house. Also, never leave
a puppy unattended in a backyard when people are setting off fireworks. We
have several stories of CCI dogs jumping fences out of fear over a 4th of
July weekend.

Picnics are a great socialization opportunity. However, leave the puppy home
if fireworks are planned. Picnics can be hot and overwhelming if there are
lots of people and activity. Bring a crate with you so you can put the
puppy away if the puppy is getting too hot or overwhelmed or if people are
setting off bottle rockets and other firecrackers.

Use the crate often this weekend. Please use common sense if you are taking
the dog with you to a group picnic. Have a game/exit plan in place if the
puppy begins showing signs of stress. We want everyone to have a very fun
and safe holiday weekend. This is one day that CCI puppies don't need to
participate. Keep the puppy safe by crating.

Wild Fires

Well in NM we are having some really really bad wild fires. Having high winds and no rain in months has led to conditions that are perfect for raging fires. Near Los Almos National Lab the town has been evacuated. The fire fighters as doing the best they can both on the ground as well as water and fire retardant being dropped from planes. Many acres have been lost to the fire so far and it is only 5% contained.
Went over yesterday to take some supplies that the TV reported were needed for the folks forced from their homes as well as the firemen. The place was jam packed with donations flooding it. It was awesome to see the out pouring of support from Santa Fe. Please keep us all in your prayers.

Here is a CCI facility dog that assists in a Spanish class. OK I know what your thinking...I thought the same thing UNTIL I watched the video. This is an awesome teacher/facility dog team. The class is engaged, learning and having fun all at the same time. As a former teacher this is spot on for getting the clase involved. I wish I had this teacher when I took french in 9th grade- let's just say it was not pretty!
Way to go yet again to CCI for providing such great working dogs! Keep up the awesome work !!!

Back from the OTC

Well I am back from the Olympic Training Center and another Veterans Air Rifle Clinic. I had a blast (yes the pun was intended!). I learned a lot of things that will really help out my scores. I also got a used shooting jacket and had it altered (thanks to the head coach Bob who knows a lady who sews on the heavy fabric) my air rifle was tested and I got 4 cans of amo that will be the best for my air rifle. The coach also had a source for a shooting table and he ordered that at well. Now all I need the the support stand (spring) seems they are hard to come by. I was loaned one by the OTC for training and use at the USA Nationals which I will be attending the first week of July.

Got my Team Training note book so I am reading some each night so I will be ready the first 2 weeks of August. I am ready to go but it really brings up so many mixed emotions of Ellie. I miss her so badly but in my heart I know she would want me to have another service dog to take care of me.

Door gets painted tomorrow

Well the front door was installed last week and tomorrow the painting man will come and strip the door frame (they did not prime it before the painted when they built the condos) prime it and then paint it. The front door will be primed to match the trim and then the inside wil be primed and painted the semi-gloss that goes with the interior wall color. So that will be ALL done- yea!

NO working dog can EVER replace my sweet sweet Ellie but it is time to move forward and go to Team Training in CA to be matched with a successor dog. I got the call a few days ago and got my Team Training binder in the mail today. I am very very excited and can't wait to see which dog I will be matched with.

I have been crazy busy. I am attending another air rifle camp at the Olympic Training center in CO. and I have been asked to shoot at the USA Nationals for air rifle!! This and a CCI golf event all before I go to Team Training the first 2 weeks of August.

Team training is mentally and physically tiring. I know Ellie had a paw in this as I will graduate 1 day shy of when Ellie and graduated 6 years ago at the NE campus of CCI. The CCI Circle of Love just keeps going around and around.

A CCI facility dog (some of you may think "pet therapy" but CCI dogs are more highly trained and thus called facility dogs)named Patrina was honored with teachers for her service to students who have special needs. They don not mention CCI by name but you can see the royal blue vest and the CCI logo patch on her vest.

My college professor and good friend has a daughter, Emmy, that is in the touring company of the musical of Hair!!! I have seen her preform since she was 13 years old and she is AWESOME!!! They make an unlikely trio, but Baloo the bear, Leo the lion and Shere Khan the tiger have forged an unusually strong bond.

Considering that they would be mortal enemies if they ever were to meet in the wild, it is stunning to see their unique and genuine friendship in these intimate pictures.

Rescued eight years ago during a police drug raid in Atlanta, Georgia, the three friends were only cubs at the time at barely two months old.

They had been kept as status symbol pets by the drug barons.

Delivered to the Noah's Ark Animal Rescue Center in Locust Grove, Georgia, the decision was made to keep the youngsters together, because of their budding rapport.

'We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together,' said Diane Smith, assistant director of Noah's Ark.

'To our knowledge, this is the only place where you'll find this combination of animals together.'

Living with the zoo's founders for the past eight years, Shere Khan, Baloo and Leo have now moved to a purpose-built habitat where the US public can now witness first hand their touching relationships.

'We didn't have the money to move them at first,' said Diane.

'Now their habitat is sorted and they have been moved away from the children's zoo areas where the public couldn't really get a good look.

'It is possible to see Baloo, who is a 1000 lb bear, Shere Khan, a 350 lb tiger and Leo, who is also 350 lbs, messing around like brothers.

'They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends.'

Handled by Charles and Jama Hedgecoth, the zoo's owners and founders, the three friendly giants appear to have no comprehension of their animal differences.

'Baloo and Shere Khan are very close,' says Diane.

'That is because they rise early, and as Leo is a lion, he likes to spend most of the day sleeping.

'At the moment they are getting used to their new habitat.

'Shere Khan is being quite reticent about the move, but Baloo, the bear, is very good at leading him on and making him feel comfortable and safe.'

Explaining that the three 'brothers' have always seemed to share a unique bond, Charles said: 'Noah's Ark is their home and they could not possibly be separated from each other.

'You just have to remember who you're dealing with when you are with them, though. 'It's when you forget that these fellows are wild animals that you get yourself in trouble.'

The trio's new habitat had to be constructed carefully, in order to accommodate its occupants.

Jama said: 'The clubhouse had to be very sturdy for the guys, because they all sleep in it together,'

She added: 'We had to include a creek, because the tiger and the bear both like to be in water.'

Ellie's Wall

My great friend Tee painted my entry hallway. It is a textured look that takes many, many hours to do. He painted with a paint brush and had to gover over it again and again to get the effect of suede. It turned out so great!! It goes with the brick tone on my accent wall in the living room and the darker shade of brick on my kiva fire place. I put up a painting of a Golden that looks just like Ellie and then around it I have 8 x 10's of me and Ellie with a view from behind. The first one ever done was in San Fransico overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and the last one done was at the Grand Canyon. Enjoy!

A few thoughts about dog heaven...

I know there is a doggy heaven...how do I know? Well dog is God spelled backwards and I believe that is a way to let us folks know that he will take care of all his creatures.

Ellie must still be telling stories of all she did while she was here on earth. The many many times she flew and of her becoming the first furry Junior Pilot of Southwest airlines. All the hotels, nice fancy ones, and the crappy ones too. She has seen many different types of sports, most of which she watched from the sidelines. I guess she would tell the other doggy's that watching me surf really made her scared! So many gimps on surfboards at one time and the BIG waves in all that water!

Ellie met so many people, I hope she is better at remembering names that I am. From big people to the little tiny ones she had them wrapped around her paw as soon as they saw her.

Well Ellie you keep everyone in line in heaven and be sure to be a good greeter (like at Walmart) to all the new members of heaven and a BIG welcome to all the CCI dogs. They will be sad not to be with their special person but tell them that they are still working. Now they are their masters Guardian Angel watching over them.

I LOVE and MISS you my sweet Ellie.

Well today was out local MS Walk in Santa Fe. It started out cold and very windy but ended up sunny with just a slight breeze. I was a part of Team Happy Feet and we had a great time. They are the biggest team we have each year at the walk and it just keeps on growing. I am going to ask my church and friends to join the team next year. THANKS ya'll for loaning me a lap blanket and a hooded sweatshirt till it warmed up. I had on 4 shirts and my ski jacket and long johns but still needed a little more. As the walk went along I would drop off layers at the starting/ending point..I was just down to a long sleeved white t-shirt and my Team Happy Feet t-shirt and jeans by the end of the walk.

Team Happy Feet is thinking of doing a Flash Mob Dance at the local mall next year to raise awareness about MS and to get more folks to join in the walk and donate. The reason we walk (or in my case roll) is to raise the much needed funds to help find the cause of MS and then to find a CURE for MS!! Today I went with Janet a great friend from my church to Lowe's for my annual flower trip. I got potting soil (a lot as I dumped some of pots) some new pots, bedding plants, pruning shears and a folding saw to trim tree branches and a very nice bird feeder.

We had a great time! I always have fun with I do something with Janet! THANKS Janet for a fun filled day! Happy Spring to you all.

Little Miss Jewelann

Well here she is...this is the CCI puppy that Ellie and I named last summer at the CCI NM golf event. Because we were the lead sponsors of the event we got to name a puppy. For Ellie and I this didn't take long to come up with the perfect name. Jewelann- Jewel is in honor of Ellie's puppy raiser, and Ann is for one of my best friends and she went to Team Training with me in NY when I was matched with Ellie.

You don't know if the dog will be a black or yellow lab or a golden or some mix of both. As you can see she is black and is 3/4 black lab and 1/4 golden. She lives in Phoenix and is being raised by another CCI family member and friend, Kerry. I met Kerry over 3 years ago at the first NM CCI golf event and have seen her each year at the NM, AZ and this last year at the CA CCI golf events. Jewelann is Kerry's 6th CCI puppy she has raised.

While I was in AZ recently I got to spend some time with Jewelann! She is so smart and can do a sit, down and come and she is only 9 weeks old. Now she is a BIG girl at 12 weeks old. She loves being around people and is a very fast learner and could care less about being around a wheelchair or a wheelie! She steals every heart that sees her!

I am so blessed to have Kerry raise our (Ellie's and mine) CCI puppy that we named. My wish and prayer is that Jewelann is able to graduate and that another CCI Circle of Love will begin.

Ellie's Memorial Service

I am posting this almost 3 months after Ellie's memorial service. I have been in treatment for the last 2 1/2 months for a medial condition so that is why this posting is so late.

Ellie's memorial was held at my church on January 22, 2011 and attended by over 150 people a testament to just how many lives she touched. There were hundreds, if not a thousand more lives touched by my "golden girl.

The service was just as Ellie would have liked with some of her favorite hymns and her 2 favorite young people in the church. A young girl, Leah was Ellie's little girl and she was 9 years old. She loved Ellie from the first time she saw her and Ellie loved her too. They had a special bond and often gave each other gifts. Leah passed out the programs and then held hands with me as when processed down the isle of the church. Her "boy" (he is no longer a boy but Ellie didn't know that) Patrick, was in my Sunday school class with his parents. Every week when we would come to class I would release Ellie and she would dash over and play with Patrick till class began. Patrick lit the candle and was also a part of the procession into the service.

Many tears were shed and many many people were there to support me and show there love for a very special service dog. To end the memorial service Ellie's friends, Jan and Barb, who are both in the Santa Fe Community Band had a small brass band play one of Ellie's favorite marches. She loved march music and it was the perfect way to send her on her way to heaven.

My Sunday school class provided the reception and I did a Power Point (on a loop) of a variety of photos of Ellie that everyone enjoyed. There were display tables with some of the many items that I had of Ellie's, like her CCI vest, pilots wings, etc.

It was a very sad day and one in which I never thought I would get through at times but with the grace of God and many great friends I did. Good bye my sweet Ellie you will always live in my heart.

Dyadat Service Dogs in Isreal

Ellie's trainer at CCI in the NE region moved to Israel several years ago. She is now working on getting a facility to train service dogs in Israel. As you know it cost almost $45,00.00 to fully train a service dog. This includes vet care, food, kennel services and training.

Ellie is in heaven

My sweet Ellie

This is so hard for me to write. My dear sweet Ellie went to heaven on 1-12-2011. She had nasal cancer that was inoperable. I am so lost without and my heart and home are empty. We had so many many good times and adventures together. I was truly blessed to have her in my life.

I would like to thank Jewel who was her puppy raiser. She did such a great job with Ellie and I know Jewel will miss her very much. I referred to her as "Mommy Jewel" and often when we would chat on the phone Ellie would tell her hello. I am so glad we had what would be our last trip together to see the Grand Canyon and we were both able to spend time with Ellie. I know Jewel is heartbroken. Thanks again Jewel, I not only got the world's best service but a best friend as well.

Ann you were a big part of Ellie's Life too. I still remember when we went to Team Training in NY. I know it was hard for you not to pet Ellie so she could bond to me..but I did see the little drop of your hand to touch her back if she walked near you. I know she liked it as much as she did. The many trips we took together and all the fun we had. Thanks for all the great memories. "Miss Mustn't Touch" will live forever in our hearts.

To Jan and Barb who were there for lots of fun with Ellie and their dog Rhoda who loved to run and play with Ellie in the snow here in NM. Thank you both for your friendship and your love and support during this difficult time. For making all the arrangements, phone calls, buying Kleenex and just being a shoulder to cry on and being there when Ellie crossed over the Rainbow Bridge. I know she loved you and you loved her very much.

Dear Jere who flew from DC to be here with me. I am always happy to see him and he can always make me smile. He was so thoughtful to do whatever needed to be done. He will be flying back for the Memorial as well an true friend indeed. Thanks Jere.

Miss Janet who loved Ellie and watching her in church each week peeking around the pew to see and listen in on the children's time. I thank you for letting you into your heart and I know Ellie thanks you for the nice rug that she would lay on each week during the service. You have been a comfort to me. Your planning of Ellie's Memorial Service was a huge help and I know it will be very special to me and everyone who attends. God bless you.

Pastor Greg who always liked seeing Ellie carry her purse each week and greeting him after the service. For the blessing of Ellie as a service dog in church when he had only be a pastor at the church for only a few weeks. I am so grateful that you too were there to say a blessing before and after she went to heaven and to comfort me on that very sad day. When I asked about a Memorial Service you did not hesitate for a moment to say yes and I will be forever grateful. My church and Sunday School Class have all been very supportive and are providing a reception after the memorial next Saturday.

My CCI friends all over who have been so kind with cards, emails and thoughts of Ellie. To everyone who will be coming next Saturday those from ABQ as well as AZ to celebrate Ellie's life I thank you.

Flag over our nations capital in my Dads memory

On the 2nd of January they were supposed to fly the American flag over our nations capital in my Dads memory. I mailed off the flag over 2 months ago so I hope they flew it. I will get it back and put it in a wooden flag case since I don't have the one that was on his casket when he was buried. I will also get a certificate that says it was flown in his honor and that he was an Army Veteran that served in Korea, Vietnam and WWII.

All is well here but very cold- even for New Mexico. I live at a high altitude but we still get snow. Most folks think it is warm here all the time and some still think you need a Passport! NOT were are part of the 50 nifty United States!! OK hope you are all warm. I am rollin'.........

It is great folks like Patrick and Tee that I moved here. Everyone is like a true family here and very supportive of one another. We attend concerts that our friends are in as well as support the NM Gay Men's Chorus which is always a treat to hear.

Random Acts of Kindness

So we all know it is the holiday season...so how about a Random Act of Kindness?? Need some ideas...pay for the person behind you at the toll booth, how about the coffee for the car behind you while your paying for yours at Starbucks (admit it you DO go there!), put some pocket change/cash in a red kettle for the Salvation Army, take cookies and hot cocoa to a neighbor who made need to see a friendly face. This is not rocket science folks- how about a short visit to a local nursing home to visit with some folks who have no one at the holidays (call in advance as this time of year groups come to perform) what about a local hospital- you don't need to know a patient. A visit to one of the many waiting rooms with some cookies, magazines and some small inexpensive toys for those waiting is sure to bring many smiles.
OK so here are a few ideas to get you going and I am sure you can think of many many more yourselves! Have a nice day and remember to be kind to a stranger and smiles catch on faster than the flu!! :)

VA Mobility Assessment

OK so here is the scoop on my mobility assessment. I saw a new doctor on the Poly-trauma unit on the 2nd floor. It just opened and cost over 1.4 million dollars. OK I think that is a lot of $ myself but hey no one asked me.

So anyway the doctor was really nice- how refreshing! She did the entire whole 9 yards. You know when they use that hammer thingie to make your reflexes works. Well I used to have some reflexes in my lower legs...no,nada, zip not anymore. So that was kind of weird. I knew they didn't work anymore but they used to jump, even if only a little bit. So that is that. My legs are now much more spastic as noted when I almost fell off the exam table when I "spazed" up. So there is a med for that but been there done that (nope no t-shirt! ha ha ha) but I can't take the drug...can we say BAD reaction to it???

OK so I didn't know I now have hand tremors. Guess that is why I have some trouble zipping my zippers and doing the snap on my jeans. These things just kind of creep up on you with MS and you don't even realize it. Weird right?

She ordered me 2 new cushions for my wheelchair and back up wheelchair. I have bottomed out on this cushion. NOT GOOD as it can lead to skin break down- not a good thing for a gimp.

I rated 7 or 6 on most things (she said that was good- for my state....not sure what that mean was afraid to ask to tell you the truth) so with my service dog Ellie I am considered independent with modifications. How weird does that sound?? Anyway that is the good news. All meds were kept the same- yea. No seizures since last January so that is AWESOME! The meds that I am now on seem to be doing the trick. I am on a very high doses of 2 seizure meds but I don't have any side effects so I am cool with it.

OK so that is it in a nut shell. Hope you are all happy and getting ready for the holidays. I am over and out and rollin'..............

OK how many times have you seen a homeless person on the side of the street with a sign asking for food or money? We ALL have it is now a fact of life. So most folks think they cant do anything well here are a few simple things you can do....

Make a stop at a fast food place and get a meal- hey it can even be a Happy Meal or at Wendy's they have a lot of stuff for just $1.00. Go back and roll down the window and give the person a warm meal. It WILL warm your heart and fill their stomach.

OK your thinking I dont have time for the drive through- OK I get that. So here is where the Bags of Grace come in. Get some gallon ziplock type bags and add the following:
Bottled water
Snack crackers
Bag of tuna fish (yep it now comes in single portion bags)
Piece of fruit
A moist wipe (hey where do you wash your hands when you dont even have a home?)
Capri Sun drink- it has it's own straw
Granola bar
Pair of socks

So here is what I do. I look for the sales and then use cupons too. You can find the ziplock type bags .99 for 20, the bottled water is inexpensive. etc. You get the idea. You can keep the bags in your car and just pass them out when you see someone who is in need. My church does this. I am in the process of making 60 Bags of Grace to pass out when our church hosts a dinner at a local shelter so each person has a bag to take with them.

I also keep small ziplock bags of dog food too. I have seen many folks with their dogs. Would want to lose your home AND your dog?

This is a great idea for your church, civic club, scouts....OK so get out there and make a differnce. It costs to little but it means so much and the smile and thank you will get will make your day! :)

ADA Parking Wars

OK so I got 2 parking tickets in 2 days from the same parking police for- get this- parking in a handicapped parking space. I had to go to court today, scary for me, but a great outcome! I WON!! Both tickets were dismissed and will not be on my driving record. Did I mention I have NEVER gotten a ticket in my life?

I am glad I took photos of my tags as well as the offenders who did not get a ticket and were in the same lot that I was parked in. Everyone was very nice and helpful. Thank God I did not have to go into court...I was scared to death and my hands were shaking (and I was NOT due to my MS).

OK so at the court house I got in some education. The ramp to the entrance was not marked and I had to wheel around to find it in the very cold weather, go to the door and I could not find the button to open the door. Spoke to a lady after I got the tickets cleared up and both items will be fixed ASAP!

I then went to the Parking Division, had a bit of a drive and glad my good friend Janet from church was with me for moral support and assist with driving directions. I spoke to the head honcho and explained what had happened. He apologized, more than once. I showed him the photos and he asked if he could keep them for education of the Parking Police. They will speak with the staff about what type of tags they should and should not ticket and to be on the look out for those with NO tags or NO plates to park in the handicapped parking.

So even though I was stressed to the max since this happened (last Tuesday & Wednesday) it was an opportunity for education for the court about accessibility and the Parking Police. So it is Gimps 1 and Parking Police 0!

Winter is in the air...

Well we got a dusting of snow last night and it is cold. Broke out my heavy winter jacket and of course Ellie loves it. I am working on my holiday letter to folks and doing a little sewing that I need to do.

Hope everyone is well and ready for Thanksgiving. I am going to watch the Macy's Day Parade (on my list to see it in person) and then just have a relaxing day.

Did you know they have Law & Oder:UK on BBC America? They do!! I have seen every episode of the American versions of ALL the Law & Order so it was cool to find this on the other day. On Friday they are having an all day marathon so you know I will be watching and letting all the other folks wake up at the crack of dawn to Christmas shop! I am all done as I shop year round and donate to charity for some folks. OK I am rollin'..............

Orange MS Spirit Strips and Orange Hair!!

OK folks we all know pink is in support of breast cancer...right? Well did you know that the National MS Society's color is orange...no well now you do. Please read below what the MD Chapter President said at a recent event.

Mark said," for years we have used and heard excuses of why we cannot compete with breast cancer and how everyone thinks of it when they see pink, lack of money, how breast cancer touches so many more lives than MS".... "Well tonight I am telling you the excuses have got to stop and its time to start an orange revolution." " I challenge each and everyone here to wear orange at least one day a week and stop at least one person and tell them why you are wearing orange." I am not sure if I sent you this picture or not but it is the one the Maryland MS society grabbed off my facebook page to put up on the screen when they honored me with their Ed Duggan Mission awareness volunteer of the year award. I tell you dye your hair a couple of times and they give you an award. There were about 250 people at the dinner and we placed the spirit strip on each chair along with the evenings program. Some people put the spirit strips in their hair when they saw them.... Others waited until after I had received the award and I said, I have heard many of you have paid good money to get your hair the color you have now so I am not asking you to go all out orange as I have but I am asking you to wear these spirit strips tonight and hold onto them and wear them during MS awareness week.

The Maryland chapter is doing a fundraising dinner to kick off MS awareness week, a costume party they are calling MS Quarade. I am going dressed in orange camouflage with a fresh orange dye job ... I will be the cure hunter. Think Elmer Fudd.... Shhhh be vewwy vewwy quiet I am hunting for a Cuwwe. Shelley is going to be dressed in an orange jumpsuit with some broken chains around her ankles and wrists.... An escaped prisoner of MS. Jelina will be going dressed as a cop and handing out citations to those who do not have any orange on. They can get out of their citation by donning an orange spirit strip. Jelina will be the spirit police.

The photos above are of Jim- he started this by dyeing his hair orange...OK so you might not want to do that well he came up with a solution. Orange spirit strips you can place in your hair. Hey it is after Halloween and you can buy the spray on hair dye that washes out too! Be creative..... this is important to me as you know so let's get crackin' on this! God bless!!!

Fall is here...

Well there is a nip in the air in Santa Fe! No snow yet, we usually have some by now. As long as well get some for ski season I am cool with that! I have done some "fall cleaning" and made a few trips to the Salvation Army to make donations. I know the big thing is to downsize but that is how I have always lived. If something comes in the house something has to go and everything has a place. OK so I have OCD , for me it is a big help in living with MS. I know where things are since I always put them in the same place. How many times have you lost your car keys? Me- nope! I have a hook just inside my front door and that is where they go before I even roll all the way in the door. I guess I get lots of extra time in life because I don't have to look for stuff. Reading glasses..... that was an issue but after I got a pair for each room in the house (on sale of course with a buy on get one free) problem solved. We all just need to think out of the box at times. So go tackle that closet and if you haven't worn the item in over a year out it goes to donate (unless it is like a fancy item that is not worn that often- not talking old t shirts here!) you will feel better and you will be able to find your clothes. Most folks were 20% of their clothes 80% of the time....get one it folks! Rollin'.......

Grand Canyon

Well the Grand Canyon trip was a blast. We had so much fun. Went through the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forrest on our way out. It was sooooooooooooooo fun!! The weather was perfect with bright sunny skies and warm too. The fall leaves were just changing so we got a bonus too!
Ellie of course loved to have a chance to visit with Jewel. I got a lot of stamps in my National Parks Passport book- make off some more Stroke and Croak items that is for sure.Thanks Jewel for taking some awesome shots of me and Ellie.
Back home a short while them off to CA for the CCI golf event. Very nice event and I stayed at the Laguna Hills Marriott- can we say swanky??? I heard it had an awesome view from my room but- get this- the window was too high for me to look out of, oh well such is the life of a lowrider.

Wear purple today

Please wear purple toady in honor of those young people who have taken their lives because they were gay or folks thought they were gay and killed themselves.

This HAS to stop! Can't we just all get along with one another and live like humans? For a person to take their life when they are so young because they are bullied due to their sexual orientation (or if folks thought they were) is a loss to everyone. Who knows what they would have grown up to do or be..a Doctor or a talented violinist?

Take a moment to think about this...this is not a gay issue this is a HUMAN issue.

I clicked the button so folks cannot post a comment. I did this because someone wrote one that told me I needed to check my spelling...well I have to tell you with MS at times that is hard to do. Posting on the blog takes time and your mind not being in a fog.... so if anyone finds a spelling error oh well.

I mean come on really? I live with so much and I was never good at spelling before the MS and now it is really bad. So those who wish to read my blog enjoy but remember there may be spelling erros or typos (that is usually the case) and please excuse them.

I have things to do so I am rollin'..............
